Introduction

 

My name is  Karen McDermott, and I've been helping Los Angeles area teachers pass the CSET English Exam for more than six years.

A former lawyer, I applied the techniques I used to pass the California Bar Exam to the the creation of a "system" of study for the CSET English Exam. 

I earned my BA in English from Rutgers summa cum laude, and have taught English for more than seven years - at the high school, college, and professional levels.

LAUSD has been referring teachers who "can't pass" the CSET Exam to me for many years - because my program works - even for too-busy-to-study working teachers and yes, even for non-English majors.

 

 

My Approach

My classes and materials are content-based, with no "fluff." 

The essay sections are my specialty.  I've developed a compare-contrast essay-writing template which hundreds of teachers have not only used to pass the test, but as a tool for teaching literary analysis and essay writing in the secondary language arts classroom.
